Living in Morton, Washington
The City of Morton was officially incorporated in 1913. In the 1950’s, it was once known as the “tie mill capital of the world”. The longest railroad tie dock in the world ran along the railroad tracks east of Morton. Historic sources of revenue included logging. and it is still one of the primary industries with the largest employers being Hampton Lumber Mill and TMI Forest Products. It is the third largest city in Lewis County yet still has that small hometown vibe. Located geographically in the center of Lewis County Morton has 3 connecting major highways, US Highway 12 which runs east and west, the National Park Highway State Rt 7, and State Route 508 all with easy access points. Nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Morton has many year-round recreational opportunities just minutes away for all to enjoy!

Outdoor Activities
Gust Backstrom Park is situated on the western edge of Morton along the Tilton River a favorite pastime for fishing. The park has a playground, covered picnic area, baseball field, campfire pits, restrooms, and an RV park with 24-hour onsite caretakers. Open year-round for fun!
Jubilee Park is host to the annual Loggers’ Jubilee a much-anticipated event that takes place the second weekend of August.
Things to See and Do
The Logger’s Jubilee History is worth mentioning in that the logging show itself grew out of a friendly competition between men who made their livelihood in the business of lumberjacking. Now, it is about reliving a part of the American heritage for future generations on how it was done in the “good old days.” Some say it was 1937 and some say 1938 was when the first Loggers’ Jubilee was held, however no permanent records of those early shows were kept. Jubilee Park was another addition brought about by the Loggers’ Jubilee. Through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, the park has been gradually improved and now has a Little League ball field and playground equipment. It needs to be mentioned the Loggers’ Jubilee would not have been possible without the donations from local businesses and community support including volunteers in making the Jubilee such a must- see event. Check out this YouTube Video from one of the past shows.
Historical Attraction
Shortly after the railroad came to Morton in 1910, the Morton Depot was built to service the fast-paced rail industry. The depot was sold to the Eastern Lewis County Historical Society, now referred to as the Cowlitz River Valley Historical Society. In 2002, the relocation and property development of the depot was voted top economic revitalization project in the city of Morton. The Grand Opening of the Interpretive Center and Museum & Historic Depot was held on June 13th, 2019.
